The water bill arrives and you open it. The total is completely unreasonable.

You haven’t filled a pool. You haven’t had a house full of guests taking endless showers. So where exactly is the water going?

It’s a sinking feeling, but you probably have a hidden leak.

A burst pipe is obvious. Water pools on the floor. So you turn off the mains and call a plumber immediately. Hidden leaks, however are a completely different problem. They drip away silently behind plasterboard and under concrete slabs. Sometimes deep out in the front yard.

Months can pass, and the structural damage quietly gets worse. By the time a damp patch finally appears on your ceiling or wall, the repair bill is already climbing into the thousands.

Here is how to catch the problem early.

The Overnight Meter Test

Stop guessing and check the numbers. This test takes two minutes and gives you a definitive answer.

  1. Turn Everything off Right Before Bed:Taps, washing machine, dishwasher. Make sure nobody flushes the toilet during the night.
  2. Walk out to Your Water Meter on the Front Verge:Write down the exact numbers, or just snap a photo on your phone.
  3. Check the Meter Again First Thing in the Morning: Do this before a single tap is turned on.

Did the numbers move? If they did, water is escaping somewhere on your property.

Tracking it Down

If the meter confirms a leak, you need to narrow down the location. Walk through your property and look for the physical warning signs.

Inside the house, look up and down. Keep an eye out for: 

  • Blistering paint.
  • Warped floorboards.
  • Spongy carpet outside the bathroom door.

Trust your nose. A heavy, musty smell that won’t clear out with an open window is a major red flag for trapped moisture. Check the toilets, too. A silently running cistern can waste thousands of litres a year. Put a piece of dry toilet paper against the back of the bowl; if it gets wet, the internal seal is leaking.

Outside, look at the ground. Is there one random, incredibly green patch of grass while the rest of the yard is dry? That’s a classic symptom of a cracked underground pipe feeding the roots. Then check your hot water system. If the pressure relief valve is constantly dumping water down the drain, you are throwing money away.

Finally, just listen. Wait until the house is completely quiet at night. Can you hear a faint hissing behind the wall? Or the sound of water moving through pipes when nothing is turned on?

The Cost of Waiting

Ignoring a suspected leak is a huge financial risk. Long-term dampness rots structural timber and creates the perfect environment for termites.
