So what’s really going on down there? It’s usually down to one of these:

  • Cooking Grease: Hot oil cools, hardens, and coats the inside of your kitchen pipes. 
  • Food Scraps: Coffee grounds, rice, and pasta swell up to form solid, soggy clogs. 
  • Hair: It tangles with soap scum and completely blocks shower grates. 
  • Wet Wipes: Even the ‘flushable’ ones do not break down in the sewer.

Grease: The Silent Pipe Killer

Hot oil slides down the sink easily enough. Out of sight, out of mind.

But inside your pipes? It cools. It sticks. It turns into a thick, stubborn lining that grabs hold of anything passing through – food scraps, soap, bits of debris. Before long, water’s fighting to get past.

It’s one of the most common causes of kitchen blockages, and it builds up quietly over time.

Quick fix? Don’t pour oil down the sink. Wipe pans out. It’s simple, but it works.

Food Scraps (Yes, Even the Small Ones)

Rice, pasta, or coffee grounds. They seem harmless, but they’re not.

‘Flushable’ Wipes (They’re Often not)

Let’s clear this up. If it isn’t toilet paper, it doesn’t belong in the toilet.

Wipes, even most of the ones labelled flushable, don’t break down properly. Neither do paper towels, sanitary products or cotton buds. They snag on joins in the pipe and create solid blockages that no amount of hoping will fix.

If your toilet’s gurgling or backing up, this is often the culprit.

Tree Roots

Australia loves big trees, but big trees love water.

Older clay pipes develop tiny cracks and moisture seeps out. Roots sense it and grow straight toward the source. Once inside, they spread. They thicken and trap waste.

It’s one of the leading causes of serious sewer blockages, especially in established suburbs around Geelong and the Surf Coast.

If more than one drain in your home is slow, don’t ignore it. That’s usually a sign the problem’s further down the line.

Heavy Rain and Stormwater

  • One decent downpour and suddenly the backyard drain can’t cope.
